SNLN 253 American Sign Language 3

This course advances students’ ability to communicate in American Sign Language through increased fluency, descriptive depth, and cultural engagement. Students will explore more complex vocabulary and structures related to food, identity, clothing, housing, and Deaf cultural topics. Emphasis is placed on using classifiers, role shifting, transition markers, and expanded use of non-manual signals to describe people, routines, and environments. Students will develop skills in narrating everyday events, summarizing signed content, and participating in peer feedback using culturally appropriate strategies. Through scaffolded assignments and self-assessment, students will gain greater confidence and cultural awareness as they prepare for more nuanced ASL discourse.
