HIST 198 The Global South
This course is an introduction to the early modern (c. 1450-1750) and modern (c. 1750-present) history of the Global South. It selects compelling case studies from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Oceania, and the Pacific to investigate in depth and contrast with one another. In addition to visual, written, and aural primary sources, it privileges personal and creative genres of historical record keeping such as memoirs, oral histories, family histories, poetry, historical fiction (written or film), documentaries, etc. Rather than trying to be an exhaustive survey of early modern and modern world history, each semester selects a theme of enduring contemporary significance to the Global South that has historical dimensions.
