Students will examine how music functions in daily life, including its impact on identity development, health and wellbeing, cognitive function, communication, and social and emotional connection. Emphasis will be placed on developing students’ personal musicianship and critical listening skills, and the ways in which music reflects and influences cultural values and social interactions. These experiences will guide students’ investigation of music’s presence in their personal lives, local and global communities, social media and advertising, politics, and culture-specific ceremonies and rituals. Students of all backgrounds and experience levels will gain deeper appreciation for music’s power and meaning in today’s society and its potential to shape our lived experiences. Prior musical training is not required.
