ENG 229 Forensic Linguistics
Forensic linguistics is the scientific study of language use in the legal system. Forensic linguistics provides some linguistic background to consider how what we know about language patterns and language variation can inform our interpretation of the law. In this course, we will apply what is known about language patterns and language use to various legal contexts using linguistic analysis. Course members will learn relevant linguistic concepts for examining various aspects of the legal system (e.g., Miranda warnings, courtroom testimony). Using course content and linguistic reasoning, students will interpret and evaluate legal documents and/or case studies.
