An historical survey of jazz in America introducing students to the major stylistic eras and artists of jazz, from the music’s origins in the late 19th century to the present, including pre-jazz origins, blues, ragtime, New Orleans jazz, Chicago jazz, swing, bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, funky jazz, Brazilian jazz, avant-garde/free jazz, and fusion. Open only to students not majoring or minoring in music.
