Surveys music from various countries and historical eras, with an emphasis on European and American traditions. Students will learn to listen attentively by focusing on the elements that are shared by classical, popular and folk musics. Explorations of music from contrasting centuries, including our own, will reveal the ways changing aesthetics and societal norms impact the creation, performance and reception of music. Not open to students majoring or minoring in music.
