HIST 441 Comparative Slavery
This course compares systems of slavery and individual experiences of enslavement during the early modern and modern eras (c. 1500 to the present). It focuses on the forced and coerced labor diasporas that fueled the rise of global capitalism and the socio-economic inequalities based on race that grew out of it. Geographically this course covers the Caribbean, South America, North America, West Africa, and West Central Africa. The Atlantic ecosystem of slavery is the focus of the course, but the regions selected for comparison may vary from semester to semester.
