2024-2025 Undergraduate Catalog

Minor in Japanese

The Japanese minor offers a solid foundation in oral and written language skills as well as an introduction to Japanese culture, literature, and/or linguistics. The minor develops students' creative and critical thinking skills, thereby enhancing other university majors and minors. The communicative skills students acquire enable them to converse with ease during routine tasks and social situations and help prepare them to build and maintain collaborative relationships with Japanese speakers in their communities and in professional contexts. Coursework in the minor is grounded in a cultural lens based on exploration of the relationships among products, practices, and perspectives of Japanese-speaking cultures. Students are encouraged, but not required, to study abroad to further enhance their language acquisition and intercultural competence.
