Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

A certificate in TESOL emphasizes the understanding of the fundamentals of linguistic sciences, the theory and research of TESOL, and methods and materials in TESOL. The certificate gives both education and non-education majors alike the training they need to teach English in domestic or foreign settings; those needing a license will be eligible to take the state licensure exam and apply for licensure.

For students in the English BA with the Applied Linguistics concentration: 

  • ENG 218 will double count for the TESOL Certificate and the ENG Major with the Applied Linguistics concentration.  
  • ENG 334 is NOT open to majors with the concentration in Applied Linguistics. Instead of ENG 334, majors will need to choose an additional 3-cr hour course from the directed elective courses in the Applied Linguistics concentration to complete the certificate. 

Teacher education candidates wanting to add on the English as a New Language license in the state of Indiana must: 

1. earn a primary teaching license 

2. successfully complete all five of the approved TESOL Certificate courses (listed here) 

3. pass the Indiana Core English Learners licensure exam (#019) 

4. apply for licensure through OTES
