Biology is the study of life in all its complexity and wonder—from molecules to ecosystems, from microscopic cells to vast natural landscapes. At Ball State University, the Department of Biology invites students to explore the frontiers of biological science while preparing for a wide range of meaningful and impactful careers.

Our programs support students with interests in science education, health professions, laboratory research, environmental conservation, and beyond. The biology major begins with a strong core curriculum designed to give students a solid foundation in the principles of biology. From there, students can choose from a variety of concentrations that align with their goals and passions, including aquatic biology and fisheries, field botany, cellular and molecular biology, environmental biology, genetics, microbiology, wildlife biology and conservation, and zoology. For those seeking a broader approach, the general biology concentration offers flexibility to create a personalized academic path.

Students preparing for careers in medicine, dentistry, or clinical laboratory science can tailor their studies to meet professional school requirements through our pre-professional tracks. For those aspiring to teach, the department offers a life science teaching major designed to equip future educators with the content knowledge and practical experience needed for success in secondary schools. (Additional requirements for teaching majors are listed under Interdepartmental Programs in the College of Sciences and Humanities.)

Biology students interested in laboratory careers can immerse themselves in cellular and molecular biology, genetics, and microbiology while gaining hands-on experience with advanced biotechnology tools. Our biotechnology certificate program offers specialized training in cutting-edge research techniques, preparing graduates for roles in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, government, and industry.

Students passionate about the environment will find opportunities to study ecology, zoology, and conservation biology—fields dedicated to understanding and preserving Earth’s biodiversity. Our environmental and field biology programs combine rigorous science with practical experience in animal handling, habitat assessment, and ecosystem management, equipping students to address pressing ecological challenges.

At Ball State, biology is not just a subject—it’s a calling to explore life, solve problems, and contribute to a better world. We encourage students to meet with departmental advisors early in their academic journey to plan their course sequence and align their studies with career goals.
