The School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and offers four-year undergraduate degrees in music education, music performance, and music media production. Additional concentrations include composition, Music Industry, Music Exploration, and jazz. Our degrees offer hands-on experiences in applied study, music technology, conducting, music history and musicology, music business and entrepreneurship, music theory, and ensemble participation.
Admission to major or principal study for most programs within the School of Music is based on an audition. The Music Creation Composition concentration requires a portfolio, and the Music Industry and Music Exploration concentrations do not require an audition. Auditioning undergraduate music majors must demonstrate proficiency on one or more of the following: keyboard (piano or organ), a symphonic instrument (strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion), the guitar, voice, harp, or electronic music. Students may study traditional repertoire, jazz, or commercial music, depending on the appropriateness for their degree program. Students admitted to the School of Music are expected to attend recitals, perform regularly on their primary instrument (as appropriate), and comply with the ensemble participation policy as required by the curriculum.
The School of Music also offers several minor programs. Minors include Jazz, Music History, Music Literature, Music Recording, Music Theory and Composition, Piano, Sacred Music, Symphonic Instruments or Guitar, and Voice. For information and/or audition and admission processes for a specific minor, please contact the School of Music, as these requirements vary depending on the program.
Transfer credit for any music course must be cleared by the School of Music’s undergraduate coordinator. Students are encouraged to consult the School of Music Undergraduate Handbook, located on the School of Music website or email the undergraduate music office at undergradmusic@bsu.edu.
