Graduate Programs in Biology

The Department of Biology at Ball State University offers dynamic and rigorous graduate programs designed to prepare students for advanced study, research, and leadership in the life sciences. Our graduate offerings include the Master of Arts (MA) in Biology, Master of Science (MS) in Biology, and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Environmental Science. We also offer a certificate in biotechnology, which includes coursework that can be applied toward the master’s degree programs.

For students seeking an accelerated path, we offer an integrated bachelor’s-to-master’s program that allows undergraduates to count up to 9 graduate credit hours toward both their undergraduate and graduate degrees in biology—saving time and opening doors to early career advancement.

These graduate programs are designed for students who hold a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in biology or a closely related field. Students with strong biology backgrounds and degrees in related life science disciplines may also be admitted to begin graduate coursework while addressing any undergraduate deficiencies. Courses taken to meet these deficiencies, however, cannot be applied toward graduate credit.

Prospective students in this situation are encouraged to consult with the biology graduate advisor to assess whether their background is sufficient for beginning graduate study and to develop a plan for completing any required undergraduate coursework.

For more information about the PhD in Environmental Science, please refer to the Science section under the College of Sciences and Humanities in this catalog.
