ANTH 242 Folklore and Folklife

Introduces students to the anthropological study of informal culture, also known as folklore. The course examines the dynamic nature of informal folklore traditions and how they are transmitted through time and place. The course explores fundamental topics in folklore studies including orality and culture, the role of folk and fairy tales in everyday life, musical expression, visual and material forms of folklore, informal play, beliefs and practices surrounding the supernatural, and ethnographic methods about the collection, curation, and analysis of relevant folklore data.
