BIO 582 Aquatic Microbiology
This course will use an ecological perspective to explore the types, distribution, and roles of microbes in aquatic environments, with a focus on freshwater algae and their interactions with bacteria. Students will be expected to evaluate current literature and lead discussions of research on topics covered in class. Field collections will be used to identify the common phyla and genera of algae, to study their life histories, and to examine environmental factors that affect algal growth and distribution.
Prerequisites: BIO 216 or its equivalent; not open to students with credit in BIO 482.
