SPCE 646 Evolution of American Deaf Culture

Provides a multidisciplinary introduction to Deaf History and its formation of concepts and issues in American Deaf culture, Deaf education, and the Deaf community. Students are offered an opportunity to understand how history plays a role in shaping Deaf culture, community, and education in both a positive and a negative way and an opportunity to understand the Deaf individual in a cultural context. Emphasizes the Deaf community as a linguistic and American cultural minority and the importance of language, values, traditions, and diversity in this group. Topics will include perceptions of Deaf individuals, the effect on their self-concept and their self-identity, and how Deaf Culture has similarities and differences from mainstream American Culture.
