Major in Spanish (BA/BS)
The Spanish major offers studies through advanced-level courses. These courses include language, linguistics, and cultural studies from across the Spanish-speaking world within and outside the United States. This program is designed to give students the flexibility to specialize in an area of their choosing (e.g., linguistics; language for the professions; literature, film or other cultural studies area). As students advance in their communicative skills in Spanish, they add multiple tools to their toolbox, including: They deepen their understanding of and appreciation for how others communicate across the Spanish-speaking world; they add to their professional and leadership skills in any work environment; they hone their listening and speaking skills on a variety of topics and in diverse situations; and they gain practice interacting with respect and equity-minded perspectives. These skills allow students to build and maintain collaborative relationships with Spanish speakers in their communities and professional contexts. The major also develops students’ creative and critical thinking skills, thereby enhancing other university majors and minors. Students are highly encouraged, but not required, to study abroad to further enhance their Spanish language acquisition and intercultural competence.
