Women’s and Gender Studies

E. Agnew, Director

The interdisciplinary major and minor in women's and gender studies offers students a comprehensive program that investigates women's and men's gendered experiences and introduces theories and methods of the discipline of women's and gender studies. Attention to intersections of gender with culture and belief, sexuality and sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, class, nationality, geography, age, (dis)ability, and religion (among other factors) is a hallmark of the program. By evaluating historical and contemporary issues, women's and gender studies students can broaden their understanding of current gender issues and critically investigate these intersections through learning grounded in feminist research and theory.

Our classes train students to identify and explain how gender definitions and norms, and gendered institutions, affect perspectives, behaviors, experiences, and the life chances of individuals. Class assignments and projects will encourage students to synthesize interdisciplinary knowledge and provide a reflection on these experiences. Students will also learn to evaluate gender-related social problems, indicate possible actions to alleviate the issue and justify a decision regarding appropriate action.

The program's major and minor complement and aid in preparing students for professional work in many fields such as social services, education, government, and nonprofits. Moreover, our program enables students to become well-informed citizens who are active in their local communities.
