Cognate in Early Childhood Education

The Early Childhood Education cognate provides a strong theoretical base for understanding young children's development and experiences  prior to their entry in formal kindergarten.  This cognate is recommended for doctoral students from disciplines within and outside the Teachers College who have a specialized interest in working with young children and their families. Coursework includes exploration of play and creativity, working with families, and assessment.

15 credit cognate

For the 15 credit cognate in early childhood education, the following 5 courses are required: ECYF 630, ECYF 640,  ECYF 648, ECYF 653 and EDEL 644. These provide a solid theoretical base for understanding young children's early experiences.

Substitutions can be made with approval of cognate committee member or director of the program.

For the 24 credit cognate in early childhood education, the following 5 courses (15 credits) are required: ECYF 630, ECYF 640,  ECYF 648, ECYF 653 and EDEL 644. These provide a solid theoretical base for understanding young children's early experiences.  The other 3 courses (9 credits) will be selected as electives from the other ECYF courses.   These courses provide a solid foundation for understanding and working with young children and their families.
