2023-2024 Undergraduate Catalog

Teaching Major in Social Studies (BA/BS)

CIP Code

13.1318

99 credits

The social studies teaching major is designed to prepare students to be transformative teachers who promote diversity, equity, inclusivity, and social justice. Completion of the major enables program graduates to draw upon their deep content knowledge in history and the social sciences and their pedagogical content knowledge in order to engage middle and high school students in the interdisciplinary and discipline-specific thinking necessary for civic life.

To ensure adequate content preparation, social studies teaching majors will complete 57 credit hours in history and the social sciences. Program graduates will be licensed in broad-field social studies at the middle school level and in specific disciplines at the high school level (disciplines include: economics, geography, history, political science/government, psychology, and sociology). All students will complete 30 credit hours in history and will be licensed in history, and they will select one additional social science license area of concentration (completing 15 credit hours in this discipline). To ensure broad-field social studies certification, students will also complete 12 hours in the social sciences (3 credit hours in each of the four social science disciplines not licensed to teach at the high school level). See department statements for course requirements. Students are encouraged to pursue licensure in an additional concentration in the social sciences.

Teaching majors must earn a C or better in all courses taken in history, geography, political science, psychology, and sociology as part of the teaching major. For courses taken in economics as part of the teaching major, students must earn a C+ or better in ECON 201 and ECON 202; in all other economics courses (including ECON 116), teaching majors must earn a C or better.

Teaching majors require additional courses (42 hours) in professional education. These courses are both specific to teaching history/social studies and provide background in general education practices. Professional education courses are included in this listing.
