Philosophy

Philosophy students learn to think critically. Philosophy students become precise readers, writers, and speakers who are able to thoughtfully and creatively engage big questions concerning right and wrong, justice, freedom, beauty, knowledge, and truth. By evaluating historical and contemporary arguments, philosophy students are able to justify their conception of the world and humanity’s place in it with cogent reasons.

Religious Studies

Religious literacy is a critical skill for students preparing to enter more diverse workplaces in a rapidly changing world. Religious Studies teaches students about a vast range of beliefs, scriptures, rituals, holidays, and symbols. Students explore and deepen their awareness of religion’s influence on their own lives and their world while gaining an appreciation for religious diversity. They learn how to navigate different and often complicated spaces and engage in respectful, meaningful dialogue across religious differences. Our classes train students to think critically, write analytically, and make valuable personal decisions about the role of religious ethics and identity in some of the most pressing social, economic, and political issues of our time

The department’s programs in philosophy and religious studies offer excellent preparation for professional work in many fields, including education, law, public service, social work, government, writing, and religion.
