MUSE 660 Advanced Studies in Instrumental Music Education

This course will explore various philosophies, ideas, and instructional techniques for the development, administration, and maintenance of quality instrumental music education programs (i.e., wind bands and orchestras) at the K12 level. Emphasis will be placed on the continued development of students’ instructional knowledge, pedagogy, and musicianship skills in the context of improving teaching processes and in light of appropriate state and national standards. Specific topics will be at the discretion of the instructor, but may include various approaches, repertoire and resource selection, technology, assessment practices, instrumental styles and techniques, instrument-specific techniques, characteristic timbre and intonation, multiculturalism and culturally responsive curricula, program administration and advocacy, and creative expression through the playing of instruments. A maximum of 6 credits may be earned.
