Programs
The Department of Computer Science at Ball State University offers two graduate-level certificates in Artificial Intelligence plus a full Master’s Degree in Computer Science.
The online master’s in computer science emphasizes applications and specializations with hands-on learning experience in state-of-the-art areas such as machine learning, data analytics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and software engineering. The program allows for flexibility in electives across many different areas within computer science, to allow the student to customize their path through the program. The curriculum also incorporates industry content to enhance career outcomes, preparing graduates for roles in software development, network and systems engineering, and more.
The department also offers two graduate-level certificates in Artificial Intelligence. These certificates go beyond basic prompt engineering to understand how modern AI systems are constructed and customized, and also incorporates the important ethical considerations involved in using AI. Additionally, these courses count towards the completion of the full Master’s Degree in Computer Science.
The AI Foundations: Data Analytics and Machine Learning Certificate is a 3 course (9 credit hour) certificate which provides learners with a strong foundation in programming, data analytics, and machine learning. It is designed for individuals beginning their exploration of data-driven technologies and artificial intelligence. Learners develop core programming skills with an emphasis on working with data, including analysis, visualization, and introductory machine learning concepts. The program builds progressively to cover data acquisition, transformation, and manipulation, as well as techniques for managing and processing large-scale and complex datasets.
The AI Theory and Ethics certificate is designed for learners who already possess foundational computing knowledge and are prepared to engage with advanced concepts in artificial intelligence. The program develops core theoretical, computational, and ethical competencies essential for success in machine learning and AI-driven systems. Emphasis is placed on responsible and human-centered AI, including ethical decision-making, fairness, accountability, and the broader societal impacts of intelligent technologies.
Ball State University has partnered with Coursera, one of the largest online learning platforms in the world to deliver the Ball State educational experience to a wide range of learners. The curriculum is designed by Ball State University, courses are taught by our accomplished faculty, and content is delivered through the Coursera platform.
These programs are built for learners of all educational backgrounds and career experiences. No prior education is required, and admission to the master’s program is handled through performance-based admissions. More information is available here.
