This course provides an overview of the fields of epidemiology and public health surveillance to non-majors and to public health majors or minors in the early stages of their coursework, prior to taking required upper-level biostatistics and epidemiology courses. The course provides an introduction to these disciplines with decreased emphasis on the mathematical details of statistical analyses and study design. The course emphasizes the role of epidemiology in public health and the scope of its practice. The course also examines how patterns of disease occurrence and transmissions affect society and the roles that epidemiology and public health surveillance play in protecting and promoting the health of individuals and populations. Students are also taught how to read, understand and critically evaluate epidemiologic and other public health studies so that they will be better informed consumers of the public health literature. Prerequisite: HSC 180, Min Grade: C or better
