CH 334 Chinese Cultures and Societies

This course provides a panoramic view of the history, cultures and societies of China and Taiwan. Students will study important aspects of Chinese cultures and their relationship with society in the process of China and Taiwan’s historical transformations. The topics may include kinship and family, religion and belief, rural-urban relations, ethnicity, gender, politics, economy, health, and environment, etc. Readings, lectures, films, field trips and discussions will highlight both macro-level processes of social change and continuity, as well as micro-level everyday experiences of individuals involved in these processes.

Taught in English.
