The School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and offers Master of Music (MM); Master of Arts (MA) in music; Doctor of Arts (DA) in music; an artist diploma certificate; and a certificate in entrepreneurial studies in music.
Admission to a graduate program within the School of Music is based on an audition in applied music for performance and conducting-related degree programs, while academic areas like Music Education, Theory, Composition, and History have differing portfolio requirements. Additionally, all applicants complete an interview with the graduate coordinator; submit three letters of recommendation, transcripts, and a CV/resume; other requirements may depend on the program. For those who desire a comprehensive exploration of performance, music education, conducting, theory, composition, or research, our two-year Master of Music degree offers diverse programs tailored to match specific interests. Additionally, the Master of Music degree with a specialized focus in music education has an on-campus version as well as a fully online program option that’s designed for working teachers. The Master of Arts degree is designed to cultivate a comprehensive and well-rounded understanding of music, encompassing various aspects such as music performance, theory, education, and music history/musicology. This program ensures a balanced and robust foundation of knowledge in the field of music.
The Doctor of Arts degree is designed for individuals seeking to combine advanced scholarship with professional practice in their chosen field of study. This program places a strong emphasis on the primary area within the major field of study and includes a comprehensive secondary area of study selected from within the school of music or a related program on campus. The curriculum incorporates an internship and an externship that provide real-world experience as well as the option to present either a traditional or a lecture recital dissertation at the end of study.
The Artist Diploma provides advanced and specialized training to exceptionally talented and dedicated artists in music. It is a postgraduate certificate program that focuses on further honing the skills and artistry of performers who are at an elite level. The entrepreneurial studies certificate is available as a stand-alone program, as an addition to a master’s degree, or as a doctoral secondary area. The program empowers musicians to spearhead fulfilling artistic endeavors and create employment opportunities for themselves to adapt to the changing professional landscape for music in the 21st century.
