Cognate in Executive Development for Public Service

Are you an executive, manager, or supervisor for a government, not-for-profit, or for-profit organization? Are you looking for a master’s degree that will boost your leadership and administration skills? Do you envision a graduate program that not only surveys society and community but also focuses on the human behavior of individuals working for public service organizations? A program that also explores human relations principles and covers effective communication techniques?

A doctoral cognate in executive development and public service program is the answer to these questions. Plus, you have the opportunity—depending on your career goals—to put your degree emphasis on business, communication, gerontology, political science, psychology, healthcare, higher education, or other disciplines. 

This degree could take you to settings such as in industry, government, military, and health and human services.

Depending on the courses you take, the program can be taken all online or as a blend of online and live, on-site courses in Muncie, Indiana. 

15 or 24 credits

15 credit cognate

For the 15 credits cognate in executive development for public service, the student needs to select at least one course from 4 of the seven areas listed below for a total of 5 courses for the cognate. The selection of courses is recommended and approved by the Cognate committee member.

·       adult education, program evaluation, and staff development

·       business and related areas

·       communications

·       educational technology

·       educational administration and supervision

·       health science

·       political science

·       psychology

·       other concentrations approved by the student’s committee.

These courses provide opportunities to widen the knowledge base of the doctoral student related to his/her own research area. Substitutions can be made with approval of cognate committee member or director of the program.

The course list is the same for 15 or 24 credit cognate. 

24 credit cognate

For the 24 credits cognate in executive development for public service, the student needs to select at least one course from 4 of the seven areas listed below for a total of 8 courses for the cognate. The selection of courses is recommended and approved by the Cognate committee member.

All of the courses in the cognate will be approved by the cognate chair and committee. 

The cognate Executive Development for Public Service requires either 15 or 24 credits of graduate course work. This is an interdisciplinary cognate where students must take at least one course from at least four content areas of the other seven categories of study which are listed below.  The selection of courses is recommended and approved by the Cognate committee member.
