Major in Biomedical Science (BA/BS)
The Major in Biomedical Science prepares students for advanced study and careers in human and animal health, biomedical research, and clinical practice. Grounded in a rigorous foundation of biology, chemistry, physics, and anatomy & physiology, the program emphasizes scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and laboratory competency essential for modern biomedical professions.
Students develop a deep understanding of human disease, cellular and molecular mechanisms of health, and the tools used to diagnose, prevent, and treat medical conditions. Throughout the curriculum, students engage in laboratory-intensive coursework, undergraduate research, and professional development opportunities designed to strengthen competitiveness for professional programs.
To support diverse career goals, students may tailor their degree by selecting one of several pre-professional concentrations, each aligned with admission expectations for professional healthcare programs:
- Pre-Medicine – preparation for allopathic and osteopathic medical schools
- Pre-Dental – preparation for dental school
- Pre-Physician Assistant – strong emphasis on human physiology, microbiology, and patient-care exposure requirements
- Pre-Optometry – preparation for optometry school
- Pre-Pharmacy –preparation for pharmacy school
- Pre-Chiropractic – musculoskeletal anatomy and neuromuscular sciences
- Pre-Veterinary – comparative biology and animal health requirements
- Medical Laboratory Science – clinical diagnostics, microbiology, hematology, and immunology with structured clinical training
Advising is individualized, ensuring students meet the admissions standards of professional schools while pursuing relevant clinical, research, and experiential learning opportunities. Our graduates are well-equipped for entry into professional healthcare programs, graduate study in biomedical fields, or immediate employment in research and clinical laboratories.

Core Requirements, 31 credits
All students must take CHEM 230 OR 231 with CHEM 241. They must refer to their chosen concentration for guidance as to which of the two courses fits their concentration, and take it with CHEM 241. Students in the Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Optometry, Pre-Physician's Assistant, and Medical Lab Science Concentration must take CHEM 230 with CHEM 241. Students in the Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Veterinary, Pre-Medicine, and Pre-Chiropractic concentrations must take CHEM 231 with CHEM 241.
